1. Plan Accordingly
If you do not have much flexibility in your dates or are more comfortable planning things in advance, aim to buy your tickets at least 2-4 months in advance. That might mean you begin researching 4-6 months ahead (more on research later). Especially if you plan to travel during peak vacation times – holidays and summer time – airfares will rise steadily as the time approaches.
However, if you know you want to make a particular trip “someday” and have the flexibility to drop everything and go, last minute deals can save you a bundle. When you jump on a deal offered close to the date of the trip, you could have anywhere from three weeks to one day to prepare. In order to make a last minute trip a reality, it’s important to have saved money consistently throughout the year in a special travel account. You won’t have time to get funding together if you want the deal. You’ll also want to make sure you have your passport and any other necessary travel documents ready at hand.
