Yes, it is way more convenient to fly direct from your home airport to your destination. But this is not always possible, depending on where you live. Sometimes, deliberately adding a layover can actually save you money. For example, if you want to fly to the UK, you would start by researching the cheapest airfare to that destination from various hub airports. Once you find a deal you like, you can then search for the most inexpensive flights from home to that hub. Piecing together your own itinerary is a bit more work, but could save you hundreds of dollars in the long run.
If you use this strategy, make sure to leave plenty of time to catch your connecting flight. And while this may or may not net you the best deal, if all of your flights are on one airline, they should be willing to reroute or reschedule you for free if you miss a connecting flight due to a delay. If you’re on different airlines, however, you run the risk of being out the money for the missed flight.
